Pool Landscaping Ideas for Northeast Georgia Backyards
Landscaping that makes a Georgia pool feel like a resort — the right plants for our climate, what NOT to plant near water, privacy screening, and low-maintenance design that survives zone 8a.

The pool is the centerpiece; the landscaping is what makes it feel like a destination instead of a hole in a lawn. Georgia's zone-8a climate is generous — long growing season, mild winters — but pools change the rules: chlorinated splash, root behavior, and leaf drop all matter. Here's what works around Northeast Georgia pools, learned from watching our builds mature.

The golden rules of poolside planting

  • Nothing that sheds into the water. Your skimmer will teach you this lesson if the plan doesn't. Avoid overhanging deciduous trees near the waterline — Georgia's fall leaf drop is relentless (see the maintenance guide for why).
  • No aggressive roots near the shell or plumbing. Bamboo (running types), willows, and river birch belong far from the pool. Beautiful trees — wrong neighbors.
  • Splash-tolerant within reach. Plants inside the splash zone get chlorinated water; choose tough evergreens over delicate ornamentals there.
  • Evergreen backbone, seasonal color as accent. The pool area should look composed in January, not just July.

Plants that thrive around Georgia pools

  • Structure and screening: 'Emerald Green' arborvitae, tea olive (fragrant and evergreen), wax myrtle, cryptomeria, and clumping (non-running) bamboo for fast, contained privacy walls.
  • The resort look, zone-8a hardy: windmill palms and needle palms (both handle our winters), banana plants for tropical drama, hardy hibiscus, and canna lilies.
  • Workhorse shrubs and grasses: dwarf yaupon holly, loropetalum, muhly grass (the pink fall haze is spectacular against water), miscanthus, and creeping jenny spilling over wall edges.
  • Color that takes the heat: lantana, salvia, daylilies, and black-eyed Susans — full-sun performers that shrug off Georgia July.

Privacy: the request behind every request

In neighborhoods from Lawrenceville to Hoschton, the honest brief is usually "we don't want the neighbors watching us swim." Layer it: evergreen screening trees for the property line, a section of horizontal-slat fence or stone wall where you need instant coverage, and pergolas or shade sails overhead where two-story sightlines matter. Screening also does double duty as windbreak — calmer water loses less heat.

Hardscape: where landscaping meets the build

The best pool landscapes are planned with the pool, not after it — retaining walls that become planters, boulder outcroppings that look native to the grade (natural on our sloped lots), lighting conduit run before decking is poured, and irrigation stubbed to the beds. This is exactly the stuff that's cheap during construction and disruptive afterward — one more argument for designing the whole backyard in 3D up front.

Low-maintenance by design

You bought a pool to relax, not to garden around one. The low-effort formula: generous evergreen structure, drip irrigation on a controller, deep mulch beds, river-stone borders at the deck edge (no mowing against coping), and a short list of proven plants repeated confidently rather than a botanical collection. It reads intentional and costs you minutes a month.

Frequently asked questions

What should I plant for fast privacy around a pool?

'Green Giant' arborvitae or clumping bamboo for speed; wax myrtle for a native option. All evergreen, all pool-polite.

Are palm trees realistic in North Georgia?

Windmill and needle palms genuinely are — both are cold-hardy well below our typical winter lows and instantly read "resort."

How close to the pool can I plant trees?

Rule of thumb: plant trees at least as far away as their mature canopy radius, and keep aggressive-rooted species 25'+ from the shell and plumbing runs. We map this in the design so you never guess.
