3D Pool Design Process
What Is 3D Pool Design and Why It Should Come Before Any Contract
What 3D pool design actually is, how it works, and why seeing your real backyard rendered — before you sign anything — prevents the expensive mistakes clipboard quotes hide.

Most pool regret stories start the same way: a sketch on a clipboard, a contract signed off imagination, and a finished pool that doesn't sit the way anyone pictured. 3D design exists to kill that story. Here's what it actually is, how the process works at CraftYourPool, and why we won't take a contract without it.

What 3D pool design actually means

It's a to-scale digital model of your actual property — your house, your grade, your trees, your setbacks — with the proposed pool, decking, and features built into it. Not a stock rendering of "a pool like yours." You see the design from your kitchen window, from the patio, from inside the pool at dusk with the lights on. It answers the questions a plan-view sketch physically can't: How big does it really feel? What do I see from the back door? Where does the sun hit at 5pm?

How the process works here

  1. We walk your yard — measurements, grade, access, utilities, and a conversation about how you'll actually use the pool (kids? laps? entertaining? quiet evenings?).
  2. We build the model — your lot and home, then the design: shape, depth profile, ledge, spa, decking, features, materials.
  3. You react and adjust — freely — move the spa, widen the ledge, swap travertine for pavers, try the fire bowls. Changes cost nothing in a model. This is the step that saves five figures of mid-construction change orders.
  4. The design becomes the contract — what you approved is what gets itemized, priced, and built. No interpretation gap.

Why it matters more in North Georgia

Flat-lot pools are forgiving; our terrain isn't. On the sloped lots common from Gainesville to Dawsonville, elevations decide everything — where retaining walls land, how the pool meets a walkout basement, whether the infinity edge actually aligns with the view. A 2D sketch hides all of that; the 3D model settles it before anyone signs.

The economics: why free design isn't a gimmick

Fair question: why do we render designs for free? Because it's cheaper than the alternative — for both sides. Change orders are the most expensive way to make decisions; a client who moves the spa in the model instead of after gunite saves themselves thousands and saves us schedule chaos. Design-first is also why our 6–8 week timeline holds: all the deciding happens before the digging.

What to bring to a design consultation

  • Photos you've saved — Pinterest boards and screenshots genuinely help; they tell us your taste faster than words.
  • How you'll use it — a kids-cannonball pool and a wine-at-dusk pool are different designs.
  • Your real budget range — we design to it honestly instead of anchoring you high (context: what pools cost in Georgia).
  • A survey/plat if you have one — speeds up setbacks and permitting (see how permits work).

Frequently asked questions

Does the 3D design cost anything?

No — the consultation and design are free, with no obligation. If you take our design and shop it around, we're confident enough in factory-direct pricing to welcome the comparison.

How long does the design take?

Typically days, not weeks, after the site visit — and revisions turn around fast while the conversation is warm.

Can I see materials and colors in the model?

Yes — finishes, coping, decking, tile, even lighting scenes at night. Material choices look different at full scale than on a sample chip; the render bridges that gap.
