What a Pool Actually Costs to Own in Georgia (Month by Month, With Real Numbers)

Quick answer: A typical inground pool in Northeast Georgia costs $1,800–$4,500 a year to own if you maintain it yourself, or $3,600–$7,200 with a weekly service. The single biggest variable isn't chemicals — it's the pump. A modern variable-speed pump versus an old single-speed can swing your power bill by $600–$900 a year on its own.

This is the question people ask right after they ask what a pool costs to build, and it's the one with the worst information online. Most articles average national numbers, which is close to useless — pool ownership in Georgia looks nothing like Arizona or Michigan. We have a long swim season, mild winters, soft water and a brutal pollen month. All four change the number.

Here's what it actually looks like around Braselton, Jefferson and Winder, broken into the pieces you'll actually pay.

Electricity — the line that matters most

People assume chemicals are the main cost. They're usually second or third. The pump runs for hours a day, every day, and that adds up faster than anything else.

  • Old single-speed pump: roughly $70–$110 a month in season. These run at one speed — full — whether the pool needs it or not.
  • Variable-speed pump: roughly $15–$35 a month. It runs slower for longer, and because power draw scales dramatically with speed, running at half speed for twice as long uses far less energy for the same turnover.
  • Heater (gas): $200–$500 per month when actively running. Most Georgia owners use it to extend spring and fall, not to heat all summer.
  • Heat pump: $80–$200 a month in shoulder season. Slower to heat, much cheaper to run, and Georgia's climate actually suits it — heat pumps lose efficiency in cold air, and we don't get much of it during the months you'd want to swim.
  • Salt chlorine generator: $5–$15 a month. Negligible.

If you own an older pool and you do exactly one thing this year, replace a single-speed pump. Georgia Power rates being what they are, the payback is usually two to three years, and every year after that is money back in your pocket.

Chemicals

Budget $400–$900 a year if you're handling it yourself. Saltwater systems land at the lower end for consumables but carry a cell replacement every 3–7 years at $400–$900 — so the "saltwater is cheaper" claim is true month to month and roughly a wash over the life of the system. Two Georgia-specific realities:

April is expensive. Pollen is an organic load, and organic load eats chlorine. Expect to spend two to three times a normal month getting through it. A good cover and running the filter longer helps more than dumping shock.

Our water is soft, and that costs you later. Much of the region runs low on calcium hardness. Low-calcium water pulls calcium out of your plaster to balance itself — that's etching, and it shortens the life of a surface that costs five figures to replace. Calcium chloride is cheap. Resurfacing five years early is not.

Water

Modest, but not zero. Evaporation in a Georgia summer runs a quarter to a half inch a day on an uncovered pool — call it $20–$50 a month on municipal water, less if you're covering it. The bigger number is the occasional full drain-and-refill, which on a 20,000-gallon pool is a couple hundred dollars and most of a day.

If you're on a well, have a real conversation with your builder before you fill or refill. We've seen wells that simply can't sustain it, and running one dry is a far more expensive problem than the pool.

Weekly service, if you want it

$150–$250 a month in this area for weekly service, typically chemicals included, usually billed year-round rather than seasonally. That's $1,800–$3,000 a year on top of power and water.

Worth it or not depends less on money than on honesty about yourself. Pool care is about twenty minutes a week done consistently, and roughly four hours of misery done occasionally. If you'll actually test twice a week, do it yourself. If you know you won't, pay someone — neglected chemistry damages surfaces and equipment, and that repair bill dwarfs the service you skipped.

Repairs and the replacement schedule

This is where budgets fall apart, because these costs are lumpy. Nothing happens for four years and then two things happen at once. The fix is simple: set aside a few hundred dollars a year and let it accumulate.

  • Pump motor: 8–12 years, $600–$1,600 to replace.
  • Filter cartridges: every 2–4 years, $150–$400. DE grids and sand run longer.
  • Salt cell: 3–7 years, $400–$900.
  • Heater: 8–12 years, $3,000–$6,000 installed.
  • Automation / control board: 10+ years, $500–$2,000.
  • LED lights: 10–15 years, $400–$900 each.

Amortized, that's roughly $700–$1,400 a year across the life of the pool. It's real money, and it's the number that separates people who enjoy owning a pool from people who feel ambushed by it.

Putting it together

DIY maintenance, modern equipment, no heater: roughly $1,800–$2,600 a year. This is the best case and it's genuinely achievable on a newer pool with a variable-speed pump and a cover.

DIY, older equipment, occasional heater use: roughly $3,000–$4,500.

Full weekly service, heater, older equipment: $6,000–$7,200 and up.

The gap between the top and bottom of that range is mostly equipment age and whether you use a cover — not how fancy the pool is. A large custom pool with modern equipment routinely costs less to run than a small twenty-year-old one.

Four things that genuinely lower the number

  • Variable-speed pump. The biggest single lever, by a distance.
  • A cover. Cuts evaporation, cuts chemical loss, cuts heat loss. The least glamorous purchase in the whole category and the highest return.
  • Keep calcium hardness in range. Protects the most expensive component you own.
  • Automation. Not a luxury item as often as it's sold as one — scheduling makes the efficient thing happen automatically, which is the only way it happens consistently.
